US September melamine imports down 4% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US melamine imports in September decreased by 4% from the same month in 2011, according to data made available by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.

US melamine imports fell to 2,961 tonnes in September from 3,076 tonnes in September of last year.

Imports fell in September mainly because of decreased product brought in from Trinidad & Tobago.

September imports also decreased from 4,515 tonnes in August.

Trinidad & Tobago at 1,600 tonnes was the major source of US melamine imports, followed by the Netherlands at 842 tonnes, Germany at 408 tonnes, China at 105 tonnes and Spain at 3 tonnes.

The US exported 2,659 tonnes of melamine in September, down from 2,985 tonnes in August.

The United Kingdom at 840 tonnes was the major destination for US melamine, followed by Russia at 400 tonnes, Norway at 340 tonnes and Romania at 300 tonnes.

Other destinations included Canada, Colombia, Japan, Brazil, Ireland and Argentina.

The US exported 1,691 tonnes of melamine resins in September, down from 2,248 tonnes in August.

Major destinations included China at 355 tonnes, Mexico at 320 tonnes and Canada at 259 tonnes.

Other destinations included Brazil, Australia, India, Korea, Singapore, Germany and Argentina.

Cornerstone Chemical is the only North American producer of melamine.
