GPCA: Saltic plans Oman caustic and EDC plant

Saltic FZC is planning to start construction on a worldscale liquid caustic soda and ethylene dichloride (EDC) plant in the Salalah Free Zone, Oman, in January 2013, Rohit Kumar, project manager for the company said.

The Oman-based chemical producer's new plant will produce 1,231 tonnes/day of EDC and 1,000 tonnes/day of caustic soda. Production at the plant is expected to start in the first quarter of 2015.

"We will be producing caustic soda lye, which will be exported," Kumar said.

The plant will cover approximately 35 hectares (86 acres) and will cost $500m (€385m). Production will be based on the latest membrane cell technology provided by Chlorine Engineering of Japan.

Caustic soda is used in many products such as textiles, detergents, pulp and paper, drinking water and drain cleaner. The caustic soda from the complex will be mainly used for the refining of bauxite to produce alumina.

EDC is used for manufacturing vinyl chloride monomer, which is the key raw material for producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
