SINGAPORE (ICIS)--SCG-DOW Group has initiated trials run at its 150,000 tonne/year propylene glycol (PG) plant in Thailand on 23 November, sources close to the company said on Friday.
The plant is situated at the Asia Industrial Estate site near Map Ta Phut.
“The plant will begin trial intake of propylene oxide (PO) and water feedstock today (Friday). The trial runs are expected to be complete by early December,” a company source said.
“The first shipment of PGI (industrial grade propylene glycol) is expected to arrive in China in early January,” said another company source based in China.
PGI is used in downstream unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) manufacture, humectants, antifreeze, liquid detergents and surface coatings.
Some market sources estimate that the PG plant will begin production of pharmaceutical grade PG (PG USP) three to four months after PGI production.
PG USP is used in medications, flavours, food, beverages, cosmetics, personal care items and animal feed.
The PG plant is sited in close proximity to the company’s 390,000 tonne/year propylene oxide (PO) facility, which employs the sustainable hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) technology.
