US natural soda ash production drops by 5.7% in September

MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US production of natural soda ash in September fell by 5.7% month on month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Tuesday.

US production decreased to 962,000 tonnes, down from 1.02m tonnes in August, the survey said.

Ending inventories for September were 339,000 tonnes, 3% lower than the preceding month's inventories of 350,000 tonnes.

Wyoming trona production in July was 1.13m tonnes, according to the data.

Mexico and Brazil were the largest importers of US soda ash from the beginning of the year, importing 706,000 tonnes and 452,000 tonnes, respectively.

Indonesia came in third, importing 390,000 tonnes since the beginning of the year, according to the data.

Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.

US producers include Solvay, OCI Chemical, FMC and General Chemical Industrial Products.
