CAMPINAS, Brazil (ICIS)--Brazilian October chemical production fell by 2% month on month while domestic sales fell by 2.25% as a result of power outage, a trade group said on Wednesday.

The outage affected Brazil's northeast, north and centre-south regions, according to Abiquim.

Incidents such as power outages increase the cost of the sector, according to Fatima Giovanna, Abiquim's economy and statistics technical director.

"For the chemical industry, which operates most of its plants in a continuous process, the uncertainty regarding the safe supply of electricity is a very worrying factor now, because such stoppages have been resulting in a high cost for companies, especially when the furnaces are affected [and there's] a delay to get operations back to normal", she said.
