HOUSTON (ICIS)--Chevron Phillips Chemical has shut down its Sweeny 22 cracker in Texas for a brief maintenance stoppage, market sources said on Wednesday.

The 295,000 tonne/year plant was shut down earlier this week, sources said, adding that the unit would be down for 4-5 days.

US polyethylene (PE) demand is weak and that may have encouraged the company to take the outage, a market participant said.

A company spokesperson declined to comment on the shutdown, citing policy.

Chevron Phillips has two other crackers in Sweeny with a combined 1.58m tonnes/year of ethylene capacity.
