TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s production of caustic soda decreased by 16% to 287,732 tonnes in October from the same period a year earlier, reflecting lower domestic demand and exports, official industry data show on Thursday.

The country’s domestic demand for caustic soda came in at 251,155 tonnes in October – a 14% year on year decline, while exports fell by 38% year on year to 40,825 tonnes, according to the Japan Soda Industry Association (JSIA).

Meanwhile, output of soda ash was down by 13% to 25,283 tonnes in October 2012 from October 2011, while internal demand fell by 8.8% year on year to 28,066 tonnes, the data show.

Exports of soda ash, however, more than doubled to 166 tonnes in October 2012, based on the statistics.
