LONDON (ICIS)--Malaysian state-owned petrochemicals major Petronas has selected INEOS to provide the technology for the linear low or high density polyethylene (LLDPE/HDPE) segment of a major project, the company said on Thursday.

INEOS Technologies’ Innovene G gas phase polyethylene (PE) process technology is to be used in the LLDPE/HDPE portion of Petronas’ Refinery & Petrochemical Development (RAPID) project, expected to be operational by 2016.

With a predicted capacity of 350,000 tonnes/year, the LLDPE/HDPE plant will manufacture a range of PE resins, including HDPE, LLDPE and metallocene linear low density polyethylene (MLLDPE).

Products will include high performance films, as well as moulding and packing for industrial and consumer sector applications in Malaysia and other Asian markets, the company said.

“The petrochemical component of the project will allow Petronas to expand its product portfolio from commodity petrochemicals to premium differentiated and specialty chemicals, capitalising on the growing demand for these higher value products in the Asia-Pacific region,” Petronas said in a statement.

Separately, INEOS announced on Wednesday that list prices for its INEOS ChlorVinyls subsidiary’s caustic soda are to increase by €140 ($182) per dry metric tonne, with effect from 1 January 2013.

December list prices are also to be raised by €70/tonne "where terms permit", with the remaining €70/tonne increase to be applied from January, the company said.
