NEW YORK (ICIS)--Contract prices for US phthalic anhydride (PA) were assessed down by 3.25 cents/lb ($72/tonne, €55/tonne) in December, following a decline in the feedstock orthoxylene (OX) contract in November, sources said today.

PA monthly contracts are settled on the OX contract price in the previous month. The OX contract settled down from October by 3.25 cents/lb to 63.75 cents/lb FOB (free on board) in November.

US PA December contracts are assessed at 79.75-86.75 cents/lb FOB molten grade and 80.75-87.75 cents/lb DEL (delivered) flake grade, according to ICIS.

PA is a key intermediate in the production of plasticizers, which are used to make products such as flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Major US PA producers include BASF, Koppers and Stepan.
