Tokyo (ICIS)--Japan's production of plastic feedstocks fell by 0.2% to 791,200 tonnes in October from the previous month, the Japan Plastics Industry Federation (JPIF) said on Monday.
This is a 6.3% decrease from the same period a year earlier, Tetsushi Suzuki, a JPIF official, said at a press conference.
Among the total, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production was down by 9.3% month on month to 118,645 tonnes, and down 6% year-on-year, official data from the federation showed.
Production of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) rose by 10% to 15,768 tonnes in October from September, but decreased by 17% from the same time a year earlier. The production of polyethylene (PE) rose by by 9.1% month on month to 217,502 tonnes, and by 3.1% year on year, based on the data.
The country's production of plastic products was up by 3.1% to 481,100 tonnes in October 2012 from the previous month, and increased by 1.2% from October 2011, according to the federation.
October became the first month to mark a year-on-year increase since March 2012, which is partially due to an increase in pipes and pipe fittings output from the corresponding period last year, Suzuki said.
"In September-October last year, there was also a flood in Thailand [which indirectly affected Japan's plastic production]," Suzuki added in Japanese.
Among the total production of plastic products, the output of pipes rose by 4.3% month on month to 45,348 tonnes in October, and increased by 19% year on year, according to the data.
Production of film and sheet was up by 3% to 208,387 tonnes in October from the previous month, and increased by 0.6% from the same period a year earlier, the data showed.
Japan's exports of plastic feedstocks fell by 12% to 273,464 tonnes in October from the same time a year earlier, according to the JPIF.
"[The figures] clearly show Japan's [plastic] feedstocks are suffering," Suzuki said.
The country's imports of plastic feedstocks rose by 16% to 204,598 tonnes in October from the previous year, the statistics showed.
Japan's exports of plastic products rose by 1.7% year on year to 68,459 tonnes in October, while imports were up by 7.9% to 165,446 tonnes, the data showed.
The increase in imports was partly due to increases in the import levels of polypropylene (PP) film and PE film, Suzuki said.
