11 December 2012 17:17 [Source: ICIS news]MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--Brazil's Braskem, Latin America's largest petrochemical company, halted production of basic chemicals at its Triunfo petrochemical complex, the company said on Tuesday.
Basic chemical and steam production was stopped after a strong thunderstorm knocked out electricity at the complex in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, the company said.
The interruption of the steam system caused the burning of feedstock naphtha in the flare system, Braskem said.
The steam system and plant operations are expected to be back to normal by the end of the day, according to the company. The petrochemical complex produces basic chemicals, as well as polypropylene (PP), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and green polyethylene (PE), according to Braskem.
