LONDON (ICIS)--A chemical accident at a Novartis pharmaceuticals plant near Basel, Switzerland, injured 13 workers on Tuesday morning, Swiss state media reported, citing police and company officials.

The accident, at around 11:40 local time, was due to a leakage of thionyl chloride, officials said.

Six of the 13 workers suffered severe coughing and were hospitalised

The accident did not pose a danger surrounding residents, regional authorities said.

Novartis media officials could not immediately be reached for additional comment.

Exposure to thionyl chloride can cause injuries to skin and eyes, as well as the respiratory tract.
