US natural soda ash production rises by 2% in October

MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US production of natural soda ash in October rose by 2% month on month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Thursday.

US production increased to 982,000 tonnes, up from 962,000 tonnes in September, the survey said. =

Ending inventories for September were 324,000 tonnes, 4% lower than the preceding month's inventories of 339,000 tonnes.

Wyoming trona production in October was 1.54m tonnes, according to the data.

Mexico and Brazil were the largest importers of US soda ash from the beginning of the year, importing 779,000 tonnes and 522,000 tonnes, respectively.

Indonesia came in third, importing 493,000 tonnes since the beginning of the year, according to the data.

Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.

US producers include Solvay, OCI Chemical, FMC and General Chemical Industrial Products.
