LONDON (ICIS)--The European Commission is opening a public consultation on the exploration and production of shale gas and other unconventional fossil fuels, it said on Thursday.

The consultation is aimed at helping the Commission prepare a framework for the exploration and production of shale gas and other unconventional fossil fuels in Europe, it said.

The Commission aims to ensure that any further development of unconventional fossil fuels is carried out with the proper health, climate and environmental safeguards in place, with maximum legal clarity and predictability for citizens and operators, it added.

The questions in the consultation cover issues such as broad opportunities and challenges, possible measures to reduce health and environmental risks, measures to increase the transparency of operations, and recommendations on possible action at the EU-level.

The web-based consultation is open until 20 March 2013. It is part of a broader process that will include meetings with member states and other stakeholders, the Commission said.
