LONDON (ICIS)--BASF is to expand its annual production capacity of intermediate 1,6-hexanediol (HDO) by over 20% to around 50,000 tonnes/year by 2014, the Germany-based chemicals producer said on Thursday.

The capacity expansions, which are to be carried out at its sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Freeport, Texas, will cost more than €30m ($39.5m), the company said.

HDO is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of industrial coatings, polyurethanes, adhesives and cosmetics.
