HOUSTON (ICIS)--TPC Group reported butadiene (BD) and benzene emissions from its Port Neches, Texas, facility, citing a pressure release valve (PRV) problem in a public filing, a source confirmed on Friday.
The TPC Group source would not comment further than to acknowledge that an emissions event did occur.
According to the report filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the event took place during the start-up of a crude BD feedstock transfer from a pipeline on 2 January. In addition to the PRV opening, there was a split and a blockage in the line that had been overpressured. It was repaired and put back in service.
The emission may have lasted 30 minutes, according to the report.
An estimated 2,500lb (1.133 tonnes) of BD were released, as well as 200lb of benzene, 2,100lb of n-butane and other chemicals, the report said.
The facility has 260,000 tonnes/year of BD capacity.
