NEW YORK (ICIS)--US phthalic anhydride (PA) January contract prices were assessed up by 1.75 cents/lb ($39/tonne, €30/tonne), based on an increase of the same amount in the feedstock orthoxylene (OX) contract, market participants said on Tuesday.
The PA contract follows the movement of the feedstock OX contract price from the previous month. January contract prices are at 81.50–88.50 cents/lb FOB (free on board) molten and 82.50–89.50 cents/lb DEL (delivered) flake.
The December OX contract settled at 65.50 cents/lb FOB, up from 63.75 cents/lb FOB in November. Sources project that pricing for the feedstock will rise again this month.
PA is a key intermediate in the production of plasticizers, which are used to make products such as flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Major US PA producers include BASF, Koppers and Stepan.
