Dow Chemical decommissions Texas pipeline for inspection

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Dow Chemical has decommissioned an ethylene pipeline at its Freeport complex in Texas, citing an internal integrity inspection in a public filing on Thursday.

The company said the pipeline would be decommissioned through a portable flare, adding that emissions associated with the procedure would last until Friday.

Dow last week reported flaring from the same site as a result of a compressor trip.

The company has two crackers in Freeport with a combined 1.7m tonnes/year of ethylene capacity.

No information was available on the operational status of the units, but talk of a potential shutdown at a Dow cracker in the US has circulated in the market in the past two days.

A Dow spokesperson last week confirmed a process upset in Freeport, but the spokesperson did not respond to another request this week, seeking information on a possible shutdown.

US ethylene spot prices have risen sharply in the past two weeks, lifted by the start of planned maintenance at two crackers and speculation of potential disruptions at other units.

Ethylene for January delivery traded on Wednesday at 65.25 cents/lb ($1,439/tonne, €1,079/tonne), rising from deals done at 59.500-59.875 cents/lb in the first week of the month.

($1 = €0.75)
