SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Ningbo Heyuan Chemical has been conducting commercial trial runs at its new 500,000 tonne/year monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant in Zhejiang province since 20 January, a company source said on Monday.

“We will try to achieve on-spec production of MEG in early February,” the source added.

On-spec material from the new MEG plant will be supplied to the market in Zhejiang, which is the key production area for polyester, the source said.

However, the start-up of Ningbo Heyuan’s MEG plant may have “limited influence” on MEG prices, as the capacity expansion of polyester plants is also expected to increase in 2013, a trader said.

The MEG plant is part of Ningbo Heyuan’s 600,000 tonne/year methanol-to-olefin (MTO) project at Ningbo Industry Zone. It is also the world’s first MTO-based MEG plant.
