SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Styrindo Mono Indonesia (SMI) has restarted its 100,000 tonne/year No.1 styrene monomer (SM) unit at Merak in mid-January after completing maintenance that started in late December 2012, a source close to the company said.

The company operates a 250,000 tonne/year No 2 unit at the same location, which is scheduled to be shut in March for a month-long turnaround.

SM is a liquid chemical used to make plastic resins such as polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), as well as synthetic rubbers such as styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR) and styrene-butadiene-latex (SBL).
