LONDON (ICIS)--Kemira has completed a two-year, multi-million euro capacity expansion project at three polymer production plants in North America, effective this month, the Finland-based water chemistry firm said on Tuesday.

It added the expansion has resulted in a 60% increase in manufacturing capacity at the company's production sites at Mobile in Alabama, Columbus in Georgia and Longview, Washington. Detailed capacity information was not disclosed.

In related news, Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals earlier on Tuesday said it has signed a licensing agreement that enables Kemira to produce acrylamide monomer. Acrylamide is the raw material for polyacrylamide, which is used in wastewater treatment as well as shale gas mining processes.

Kemira said both announcements will strengthen its polymer product line globally, which is central to the group's water technology platform.

The financial details of the expansions and the agreement with Mitsui Chemicals were not disclosed.

Randy Owens, president of Kemira Oil & Mining, said: “We are excited about these steps that will support the growth of our business.

“With the new manufacturing technology we are able to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, while also meeting the challenging needs of our customers to improve efficiency, productivity and water management, he added.
