SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Technip has been awarded a contract by Westlake Chemical Corp for the expansion of their ethylene plant in Calvert City, Kentucky, the French engineering firm said on Tuesday.

The ethylene plant will use ethane feedstock instead of propane and will see a 40% increase in its production capacity to 630m lb/year (286,000 tonnes/year), Technip said in a statement.

The expansion and feedstock conversion of the ethylene plant will enhance Westlake’s vinyl chain integration and leverage low-cost ethane being developed in regional shale gas areas, the company added.

Westlake is one of the major ethylene producers in the US and its Calvert City operation is a large integrated PVC site.

Vinyl chain is the production of PVC using ethylene and chlorine.
