KUALA LUMPUR (ICIS)--Malaysia's United Plantations (UP) and Europe's Oleon expect to complete the expansion of their joint-venture fatty acid esters plant at Klang, Selangor, in Malaysia in the first quarter of 2014, a source close to the companies said on Thursday.

"The additional capacity will be used to produce food emulsifiers, which is a fast-growing segment worldwide," the source said on the sidelines of the first ICIS Asian Oleochemicals conference held in Kuala Lumpur.

The current capacity of the plant is 35,000 tonnes/year. Following the expansion, the capacity will become 50,000 tonnes/year, the source said.
Food emulsifiers are mainly used in the bakery, dairy and confectionery sectors. The existing fatty acid esters capacity is targeted at the personal care and lubricants sectors.

United Plantations is a major palm oil producer, while Oleon is Europe’s largest oleochemicals player with a total fatty acids capacity of 350,000 tonnes/year.

The two-day conference ends on 31 January.
