HOUSTON (ICIS)--Marathon Petroleum has started planned maintenance at its Catlettsburg refinery in Kentucky, a company spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.

The maintenance at the 233,000 bbl/day refinery began on 4 February on the catalytic reformer, which converts low-octane naphtha into higher octane components for gasoline blending.

The work is expected to be complete in late March, said Shane Pochard, communications manager for the US-based company.

With so few refineries in the Midwest, one outage can have an impact on spot prices. Gasoline spot prices for regular unleaded in the Group 3 region traded at discounts of 16.50 cents/gal under gasoline futures on the NYMEX.

In comparison, Group 3’s spot unleaded gasoline traded at a discount of 19.75 cents/gal on Tuesday.
