HOUSTON (ICIS) --US maleic anhydride (MA) exports were 2,505 tonnes in December, down 40% from the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data made available on Monday.

December’s figure was also 48% lower than the 4,834 tonnes of MA shipped in November, the ITC said.

December is typically one of the slowest months for sales of MA, among whose major downstream uses is the manufacture of unsaturated polyster resin (UPR), or fibreglass, which is used in making boats and automobiles.

Mexico was the top destination by far of US MA exports in December at 979 tonnes, down 37% from the 1,556 tonnes shipped in November. It was followed by Canada at 566 tonnes, Colombia at 414 tonnes, and Germany at 179 tonnes.

In 2012, US producers shipped abroad 55,150 tonnes of MA, 16% less than the 65,866 tonnes shipped in 2011. Canada was the top destination in 2012, at 20,564 tonnes, followed by Mexico at 17,261 tonnes, Colombia at 3,948 tonnes, and Brazil at 17,786 tonnes.

Major US MA producers include Huntsman, LANXESS, Ashland and Flint Hills Resources.
