HOUSTON (ICIS)--US polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exports were 283,347 tonnes in December, up 3.1% from the 274,759 tonnes shipped in the same month a year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data made available on Monday.
Exports of PVC were also up 25% from the 226,923 tonnes shipped abroad in November, the ITC said.
In 2012, US producers shippped 3,015,759 tonnes of PVC, up 3% from the 2,926,151 tonnes shipped in 2011.
Turkey was the top destination of US PVC exports in December at 41,058 tonnes, more than four times the 8,892 tonnes shipped to that country in November. It was followed by China (36,850 tonnes), Russia (26,699 tonnes) and Egypt (26,418 tonnes).
Meanwhile, imports of PVC into the US in December were 19,705 tonnes, up 20% from the 16,489 tonnes received in the same month of 2011 and up 9% from the 18,130 tonnes shipped in November.
Canada was the top supplier of PVC imports into the US in December at 14,936 tonnes, followed by Mexico (1,385 tonnes), Colombia (1,129 tonnes) and Germany (756 tonnes).
In 2012, the US imported 255,654 tonnes of PVC, up 5% from the 242,970 tonnes received in 2011.
Major US PVC producers include Westlake Chemical, PPG Industries, Occidental Chemical, Formosa Plastics, Shintech and Georgia Gulf.
