MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US production of natural soda ash in December fell by about 0.3% month on month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Wednesday.
US production fell to 966,000 tonnes in December from 969,000 tonnes in November, the survey said.
Ending soda ash inventories for 2012 increased to 315,000 tonnes at the end of December, the report said.
Wyoming trona production in December was 1.4m tonnes, according to the report.
From January through November 2012, Mexico imported the most US soda ash at 1m tonnes, followed by Brazil at 673,000 tonnes and Indonesia at 607,000 tonnes.
Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.
US producers include Solvay, OCI Chemical, FMC and General Chemical Industrial Products.
