HOUSTON (ICIS)--Stepan is looking to further expand its surfactants production capacity in Brazil to meet growing demand, the US-based chemicals firm said on Wednesday.

Stepan may either build a second plant in Brazil, or it may expand its existing facility at Vespasiano, near Belo Horizonte, CEO Quinn Stepan told analysts during the company’s fourth-quarter results conference call.

“We are in the process of looking at options to expand our plant that’s already there, and we will continue to look for a second site in Brazil as well,” Stepan said.

Should Stepan not be able to secure a second site, then it would “clearly be forced into a situation” of expanding the existing plant, he added without disclosing capacity or financial details.

Stepan credited higher volumes and operational efficiencies at its operations in Brazil as one factor that contributed to improved 2012 fourth-quarter profits.
