SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt (ICIS)--Egyptian fertilizer producer Alexandria Fertilizers (Alexfert) plans to start commercial production at its granular ammonium sulphate (AS) unit in mid-April, a company official told ICIS late on Tuesday.

The unit has a capacity to produce 500 tonnes/day of granular AS.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Arab Fertiliser Association (AFA) conference, the official said the company plans to export the majority of granular AS produced at the plant to France and possibly Brazil.

Domestic demand for granular AS is low in Egypt as it is not commonly used. Crystallised AS, which is a lower grade, is more popular in Egypt since it is less expensive.

Granular AS is popular in France and Brazil, and is usually at a $50-100/tonne (€39-77/tonne) premium to caprolactam grade AS depending on the market.

Quantum Fertilizers is believed to have signed an offtake agreement with Alexfert to sell AS produced at the plant in Europe and Latin America.

The AFA conference is being held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, 26-28 February.
