HOUSTON (ICIS)--Fertilizer producer BioNitrogen has announced plans to build five plants in Louisiana that will convert biomass composed of agricultural residue from crops such as sugarcane to urea.

Based in Doral, Florida, the company is giving a second life to the leftover materials from farming, timber and mining activities, which in the past would be view as lacking any future value. The biomass is transformed into urea through a gasification technology process and catalytic conversion.

According to the company, the facilities will be built on 250 acres (101 ha), located north of Baton Rouge, and BioNitrogen is in discussion with Houston-based design and engineering firm KBR to construct the plants. While no time table or monetary value of the new plants were given, it is project the new operations would be able to create 1,800 tons/day (1,633 tonnes/day) of urea with an annual output expected to be 621,000 tons.

“We’re extremely excited to have secured this important property. In addition to the Hardee County, Florida, plants this strategic expansion into Louisiana provides BioNitrogen with an ample supply of biomass in an area with a growing market for urea and excellent transportation,” said Bryan Kornegay, BioNitrogen president.

“We believe this is an outstanding opportunity for BioNitrogen to grow and apply its patented and proven technology to an additional five plants. We are confident that the current and growing demand for urea made domestically from biomass will be easily absorbed by the market.”

This is the second announcement of a biomass project for the company as earlier this week it was revealed that BioNitrogen is building $175m (€135m) plant facility in Florida, which is expected to commence during first half of 2013.

That plant is projected to result in production of 360 tons/day, or 124,200 tons/year of the vital crop nutrient by the first quarter of 2014.

The company has signed an exclusive agreement with CF Industries for the removal of woody biomass from phosphate mining operations operated by CF that will be converted to bulk urea.
