US January melamine imports up by 66% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US melamine imports in January rose by 66% from the same month in 2012, according to data made available by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.

US melamine imports rose to 3,770 tonnes in January from 2,270 tonnes in January 2012.

Imports rose in January mainly because of an increase in product brought in from Trinidad & Tobago. Imports from Trinidad & Tobago increased by 83%.

Exports of melamine increased by 12% in January, rising to 2,566 tonnes from 2,288 tonnes in January 2012.

The United Kingdom at 900 tonnes was the major destination for US melamine, followed by Germany at 640 tonnes, Canada at 323 tonnes, Colombia at 180 tonnes and Russia at 160 tonnes.  

Other destinations included Italy, Chile, Mexico, Venezuela and Ireland.
