HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in January were 326,994 tonnes in January, down 6% from the same month in 2012, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.
January’s figure was also 16% less than the 388,890 tonnes shipped in December, the ITC said.
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda in January, at 166,219 tonnes, up 28 percent from the 130,247 tonnes shipped to that country in the same month a year earlier.
It was followed by Canada (47,590 tonnes), Australia (41,994 tonnes) and Mexico (17,829 tonnes).
Meanwhile, caustic soda imports to the US in January were 85,759 tonnes, up 2 percent from the 84,029 tonnes shipped to the country in the same month a year earlier.
Canada was the top supplier of caustic soda to the US, at 28,385 tonnes, a 55% increase from the 18,360 tonnes shipped by that country in January 2012.
It was followed by China (25,757 tonnes), the Netherlands (25,148 tonnes) and Japan (6,312 tonnes).
Major producers of US caustic soda include Dow, Formosa, Axiall, Olin, OxyChem and Shintech.
