MEXICO CITY (ICIS)--Significant growth in polyurethane (PU) products is projected in Mexico for automotive applications and for appliances, a market source said on Monday.

However, growth in bedding applications in Mexico will be more moderate due to the nature of the domestic market, the source said on the sidelines of the 18th annual Plastimagen international plastics exposition and conference.

Trade between the US and Mexico will continue to provide support for PU industry growth in the region, as raw materials - polyols and isocyanates - flow to Mexico and return to the US as finished products in automobiles and appliances.

Additionally to the US, Mexico’s auto and appliance exports also reach several countries in Central and South America.

In Mexico’s domestic bedding industry, however, growth is dampened by strong price competition, resulting in lower density and lower quality foam. Low-cost alternate products such as recycled textiles, natural fibres or waste synthetic fibres also threaten the use of PU foam in mattresses and bedding products, sources said.

Plastimagen ends on Friday.
