SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwan’s Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp (FCFC) plans to shut its 270,000 tonne/year paraxylene (PX) unit in Mailiao in end-March for scheduled turnaround, a company source said on Thursday.

The shutdown is expected to last 45 days, the source said.

FCFC has two other PX units in Mailiao – a 580,000 tonne/year unit and an 870,000 tonne/year unit.

On 13 March, PX prices in Asia were at $1,550-1,555/tonne (€1,194-1,197/tonne) CFR (cost & freight) Taiwan/China Main Port, down $4-5/tonne from the previous day, according to ICIS.

Prices are currently weighed down by prevailing weak demand in the downstream polyester sectors, market players said.
