European caustic soda turnarounds could change trade flows

LONDON (ICIS)--Upcoming caustic soda maintenances in Europe could result in short-term changes to global caustic soda trade flows, sources said on Thursday.

A Taiwanese seller said that it has received a number of inquiries from Algeria and Tunisia, which are not its traditional markets, for solid caustic soda shipments for March and April.

This is most likely because supply to North Africa is tightening as a result of the shutdowns in Europe, the seller said.

An Iranian producer confirmed this, adding that US caustic soda makers will likely approach the European market with cargoes in the next couple of months while maintenances in Europe are carried out. The Iranian manufacturer will also sell more material to the Mediterranean if required.
