MEXICO CITY (ICIS)--SABIC Innovative Plastics is targeting Latin America's growing medical-device industry for its new line of compounds, which contain enough silver to ward off microbes, an executive said on Thursday.
The compounds will be the focus for SABIC at the Plastimagen plastics show in Mexico City, said Michael Gilbert, the company's general manager, engineering resins, North America.
The health industry is eager to reduce the pathogens on the surface of different medical devices, he said.
A lot of US-based original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are basing more of their production in Costa Rica, said Susan LeBourdais, SABIC spokeswoman.
"We are able to supply moulders and manufacturers in Costa Rica from Mexico, which makes it much more convenient for them," she said.
Altogther, SABIC is introducing nine grades that are based on the four SABIC resins that are most commonly used in medical devices, the company said.
Plastimagen lasts through Friday.
