HOUSTON (ICIS)--Renewable fuels will eventually become profitable and cost competitive, a US-based consultant said on Tuesday.
All the conditions are in place for renewable fuels, such as cellulosic ethanol, and bio-based chemicals to be successful, said Nexant’s Eric Bober at the annual meeting of the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM). The meeting ends on Tuesday.
Bober said the renewable fuel sector is highly motivated to advance technology to a commercial scale.
“It’s just the start right now,” he said. “We are now on first-plant economics. The operating and capital costs are high for first-generation [plants].”
He said there will eventually be an evolution to lower operating and technology costs once more plants come on line.
