SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Asia sorbitol prices are expected to remain steady in April on the back of stable market fundamentals, said market sources.

Spot prices were last assessed at $630-650/tonne (€485-501/tonne) FOB (free on board) SE (southeast) Asia on 20 March, unchanged from the previous month, according to ICIS data. Most industry sources said they did not expect prices to change much in April.

Demand for sorbitol, an artificial sweetener with applications in food products and pharmaceuticals, is usually flat in the second quarter of the year.

Demand tends to pick up in the third quarter because of regional festivities such as the Islamic Eid holiday and the Mid-Autumn Festival, said an Indonesia-based producer.

Feedstock tapioca prices by the Thai Tapioca Starch Association (TTSA) were listed at $470/tonne FOB Bangkok for the week ended 19 March. The listed export price includes the cost of 50kg polypropylene (PP)/polyethylene (PE) packaging bags.
