SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Shell on Tuesday began construction on several new production units at its Jurong Island site in Singapore, including a high-purity ethylene oxide (HPEO) purification column and two world-scale ethoxylation units.

The investment amount for the new units were not disclosed.

The HPEO purification column will have an initial capacity of 140,000 tonnes/year while the two ethoxylation units will have a combined capacity of 140,000 tonnes/year, Shell said in a statement.

These will add to Shell's existing capacities for HPEO, totalling 65,000 tonnes/year, and alcohol ethoxylates, totalling 40,000 tonnes/year, from the company's 2010 acquisition of its partners' shares in Ethylene Glycols (Singapore).

The new investments will also include product tanks and a HPEO pipeline grid which will deliver the material to new and potential customers near its production site, "some of whom have already signed up with Shell and are building facilities nearby", the company added.

Shell also said that it will begin on 16 April the upgrading works on its polyols production capacity that was announced in February this year.
