HOUSTON (ICIS)--US industrial gases major Praxair has started up its first air separation plant in Bahrain, it said on Wednesday.

With a capacity of 350 tonnes/day of oxygen, the unit is the largest of its kind in Bahrain.

The new Praxair plant will supply oxygen, nitrogen and argon to a local steel production plant, the company said.

In addition, the plant will also produce liquid nitrogen, oxygen and argon to supply customers in the regional merchant market, including hospitals, metal fabricators, aluminium manufacturers, refiners, chemical plants and food freezers.

“The start-up of this plant, along with our earlier acquisition of Bahrain Medical and Industrial Gas Plants, establishes Praxair as a fully-integrated industrial gases business in Bahrain, complete with on-site, merchant and packaged gas operations,” said Vipin Sher, managing director, Middle East for Praxair.

Financial details were not disclosed.
