LONDON (ICIS)--New registrations for commercial vehicles in the EU fell for the 15th consecutive month in March, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) on Friday.

Demand for new commercial vehicle registrations in March dropped 9.8% year on year to 166,402 units.

“Most markets contracted, including France (-10.2%), Germany (-18.5%), Spain (-20.2%) and Italy
(-20.3%). The UK was the only major one to post growth (+7.7%),” the ACEA said.

A wide variety of chemical markets depend on demand from the automotive industry.

In March, registrations for new light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes – vans – amounted to 139,413 units, 7.8% less than in the same month the previous year. Although the UK market expanded by 11.5%, France (-9.8%), Germany (-16.0%), Spain (-19.3%) and Italy (-20.0%) all saw their markets shrink.

March registrations in the EU for new heavy commercial vehicles of 16 tonnes or over, excluding buses and coaches, totalled 17,949 units, down by 18.3% from the same month the previous year, as all significant markets contracted, ranging from -6.2% in the UK to -16.7% in France, -20.5% in Italy,
-23.1% in Germany and -27.0% in Spain.

A total of 24,203 registrations for new commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, excluding buses and coaches, was recorded in March, a fall of 18.8% year on year, as markets in Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain all witnessed a decline in demand.

Registrations for new buses and coaches over 3.5 tonnes showed a 17.6% decline to 2,786 units compared with March 2012. While France recorded growth of 6.6%, Italy (-13.2%), Germany (-17.3%), the UK (-23.8%) and Spain (-29.7%) all saw a decrease in demand, the ACEA said.

The downturn prevailed across all segments in the first quarter of 2013, leading to an overall 11.0% decrease in the EU.

“Except the UK (+6.6%), all major markets faced a downturn, ranging from -10.7% in France, to -16.4% in Germany, -18.7% in Spain and -25.0% in Italy. In total, 401,838 new vehicles were recorded in the first three months of 2013,” the ACEA said.
