HOUSTON (ICIS)--US first-quarter 2013 benzene production and inventories were down from the same time a year ago, according to data released by the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) on Tuesday.

The drop in production and inventory came alongside weak demand and declining prices in the US benzene market.

First-quarter benzene production was at 388m gal, down by 7% from 416m gal in the first quarter of 2012. First-quarter benzene production of this year was also down slightly by 3% from 398m gal in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Meanwhile, first-quarter benzene inventories were at 97m gal, down by 4% from 101.4m gal the same time a year ago. The first-quarter benzene stocks for this year were also down by 3% from 100.5m gal in the fourth quarter of last year.

Major US benzene producers include BP, Chevron Phillips, LyondellBasell, Flint Hills and ExxonMobil – all of which contributed production figures included in the AFPM survey
