SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwan’s Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp (FCFC) had a small incident of fire at its facility in Mailiao but that did not affect its No 2 aromatics units which are still running, a company source said on Thursday.

The fire happened on Thursday morning but was quickly extinguished, the source said.

“The technical part which caught fire is one of the later parts of the entire aromatics plant. So, the aromatics outputs are not affected,” he said.

No other details were immediately available.

Prior to the fire, the unit was running at 100%, he added.

The No 2 aromatics unit is able to produce 470,000 tonnes/year of benzene, 100,000 tonnes/year of isomer xylenes and 580,000 tonnes/year of paraxylene (PX).

Meanwhile, the No 1 aromatics plant at the same site that is able to produce 130,000 tonnes/year of benzene and 270,000 tonnes/year of PX is under scheduled maintenance to mid-May.

The No 3 aromatics facility, which has a nameplate capacity of 470,000 tonnes/year of benzene, 100,000 tonnes/year of isomer xylenes and 870,000 tonnes/year of PX, is running at full tilt.
