HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in March fell 3% from the same month in 2012, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data made available on Monday.
The US shipped 416,763 tonnes of caustic soda in March, compared with 431,824 tonnes in February 2013, the ITC said.
However, March’s figure was 6% higher than the 391,630 tonnes shipped in February. Year to date, the US has shipped 1,135,388 tonnes of caustic soda, 5% more than was shipped in the same period of 2012, according to the ITC.
Brazil was by far the top destination for US caustic soda in March at 166,402 tonnes. It was followed by Australia (50,215 tonnes), Mexico (47,932 tonnes) and Canada (38,118 tonnes).
Meanwhile, the US imported 94,836 tonnes of caustic soda in March, down 1% from the 96,023 tonnes received in the same month in 2012.
Canada was the top supplier of caustic soda to the US in March at 29,846 tonnes. It was followed by China (17,852 tonnes), Japan (13,947 tonnes) and Norway (11,591 tonnes).
Major producers of US caustic soda include Dow, Formosa, Axiall, Olin, Occidental Chemicals and Shintech.
