US March imports of ABS fell by 16% from year ago - ITC

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US imports of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) fell by 16% in March from a year ago, according to a report issued Monday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Imports of ABS for the month were 10,873 tonnes, compared with 12,929 tonnes in March 2012.

The biggest declines came in imports from Mexico, which fell by 19% from 3,566 tonnes a year ago to 2,871 tonnes this year, and Taiwan, which saw imports fall by 27% from 3,399 tonnes a year ago to 2,466 tonnes in March 2013.  

Exports of ABS for the month fell by 2% from 8,182 tonnes a year ago to 7,981 tonnes in March 2013. US exports of ABS to Canada fell by 3% from 3,383 tonnes to 3,293 tonnes, while exports to Mexico fell by 17% from 3,116 tonnes to 2,578 tonnes.

US producers of ABS include INEOS ABS, Network Polymers, SABIC Innovative Plastics and Styron. Collectively, they have an annual capacity of 842,500 tonnes.
