HOUSTON (ICIS--US chlor-alkali production in April fell by 4 percentage points to 87% of effective capacity, a trade group said on Monday.

US chlor-alkali production in April was 966,332 tons (876,651 tonnes) of chlorine and 1,039,561 tons of caustic soda, according to The Chlorine Institute.

April’s decline comes after a sharp 7-point rise in March from February. A set of outages, planned and unplanned, at some chlor-alkali facilities accounts for the drop.

Although there has been an apparent recovery in the US homebuilding sector, which is a key demand segment for vinyl products derived from chlorine, it has been somewhat spotty in parts of the country.

Major US chlor-alkali producers include Axiall, Dow, Formosa Plastics USA, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem), Shintech and Westlake.
