LONDON (ICIS)--The EU chemicals trade surplus rose in January-February compared with the year earlier period as exports climbed 3%, non-seasonally adjusted data from EU statistics agency Eurostat showed on Thursday.

Chemicals exports from the 27 nation EU reached €44.3bn ($56.8bn), while import growth was marginally higher at €26.0bn from €25.9bn. The chemicals trade surplus improved to €18.4bn from €16.9bn.

Data collated for the 17-member eurozone showed a similar export-led improvement in the chemicals trade balance. Eurozone exports were up 4% in the January-February period at €51.1bn with imports up 1% at €30.4bn. The trade surplus improved to €20.7bn from €19.2bn.

Eurostat says that trade balances for the eurozone must be interpreted with caution as they include some intra-EU trade.

The major trading partner in goods, which include energy, food, raw materials and manufactured goods, of the eurozone, in the January-February 2013 period was the UK, followed by the US, China and Russia.
