Brazil Jan-Apr caustic soda consumption drops 4.5% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 849,438 dry metric tonnes (dmt) of liquid caustic soda from January to April 2013, down by 4.5% from the 889,465 dmt consumed during the same period in 2012, the country’s association of chlor-alkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Thursday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda between January and April of 2013 was 464,681 dmt, 2.0% lower than during the same period in 2012, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 390,698 dmt in 2013, down by 7.6% from 2012. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 371,047 dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 95% share of imports into Brazil.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2013 are paper and cellulose with 113,914 dmt, chemical/petrochemical with 68,136 dmt, aluminium with 37,299 and metallurgy with 24,711 dmt.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil is stable amid balanced supply, sources said.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil are Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Brasil.
