LONDON (ICIS)--EU epichlorohydrin (ECH) imports from the rest of the world rose steeply in January 2013 compared with the same month last year, statistics agency Eurostat said on Friday.

The EU imported 216 tonnes in January 2013 compared with 0.6 tonnes of ECH in January 2012. The increase was a result of Poland-based ECH producer Zachem closing down its 30,000 tonne/year plant in Bydgoszcz, which forced European buyers to buy imported material.

ECH exports in January 2013 dropped by 42% year on year.

In February 2013, imports increased for the same reasons to 736 tonnes, compared with 57 tonnes in February 2012.
