SAO PAOLO (ICIS)--Production of plastic products closed the first quarter (Q1) of 2013 with 2.6% growth compared with the same period of 2012, said Jose Ricardo Roriz Coelho, president of Abiplast, the Brazilian association of the plastic industry, on the sidelines of the Feiplastic 2013 exhibition.

The growth was led by the segment of diverse plastics, which grew by 4.3% on the back of a strong performance in the automotive sector.

Another strong contributor was the packaging sector, which grew by 4.0% during the period.

On the negative side was the laminates sector, which is still recovering from the low performance attained in the last 12 months. The laminates sector showed a 3.9% decline in Q1 compared with the first quarter of 2012.

The plastics transformation industry kept production practically unchanged during the period, with a 0.2% decline.

Feiplastic 2013 continues through Friday.
